Background of the Study
Smoking remains one of the leading preventable causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, contributing to various health conditions, including lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Smoking cessation is a critical intervention in reducing the global burden of these diseases. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a pivotal role in providing counseling, guidance, and interventions to help patients quit smoking. The implementation of smoking cessation programs, however, varies in different healthcare settings, and nurses' knowledge of the most effective cessation strategies remains an area of concern (Ogundipe et al., 2023).
Benue State University Teaching Hospital, located in the central region of Nigeria, serves as a major healthcare provider, offering both medical services and training for future healthcare professionals. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of smoking cessation, evidence suggests that nurses' knowledge and implementation of smoking cessation strategies may not be optimal at the hospital (Oloruntoba et al., 2023). Several studies have indicated that nurses often lack adequate training in smoking cessation interventions, which can limit their ability to effectively support patients in quitting (Olayanju & Olaoye, 2023).
This study seeks to assess the knowledge and implementation of smoking cessation interventions among nurses at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, focusing on identifying any barriers to successful implementation and suggesting improvements.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant health risks associated with smoking, nurses at Benue State University Teaching Hospital may not fully utilize evidence-based smoking cessation interventions. Without adequate knowledge and skills, nurses are less likely to effectively implement cessation strategies that could significantly improve patient health outcomes. Additionally, systemic barriers, such as lack of resources or training opportunities, may prevent nurses from offering the necessary support to patients attempting to quit smoking. This study aims to investigate the knowledge and implementation of smoking cessation interventions by nurses and explore potential barriers to effective intervention.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of nurses’ knowledge about smoking cessation interventions at Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
To evaluate the implementation of smoking cessation interventions by nurses at the hospital.
To identify the barriers to the effective implementation of smoking cessation interventions in the hospital setting.
Research Questions
What is the level of nurses’ knowledge about smoking cessation interventions at Benue State University Teaching Hospital?
To what extent are smoking cessation interventions implemented by nurses at the hospital?
What are the barriers to the effective implementation of smoking cessation interventions by nurses?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with formal training in smoking cessation are more knowledgeable about smoking cessation interventions.
Availability of smoking cessation resources is positively correlated with the implementation of smoking cessation interventions.
Nurses with more years of experience are more likely to implement smoking cessation interventions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in various departments of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, including those in primary care, respiratory care, and outpatient services. The study may be limited by the potential variability in nurses' access to training on smoking cessation and their individual willingness to adopt smoking cessation techniques. Findings may not be generalizable to other hospitals with different levels of resources or training.
